Genetic Testing
Your doctor at North Scottsdale Women’s Health may recommend genetic testing to identify potential genetic disorders in the fetus. We offer both carrier screening and non-invasive prenatal testing. Genetic disorders are the result of changes in chromosomes or genes and include conditions like cystic fibrosis, sickle cell disease, and Tay-Sachs disease which can be discovered with carrier screening.
Non-invasive prenatal testing screens for certain conditions caused by an abnormal number of chromosomes. It does not test for all types of chromosomal disorders. Cell-free DNA test can be done as early as 9 weeks of pregnancy and up until delivery. It detects some of the genetic material (DNA) from the pregnancy which circulates in the pregnant woman's blood. The cell-free DNA test is done on a sample of her blood. Screening tests are used to estimate whether your fetus is at higher risk or lower risk of having a certain condition. A blood sample is taken from the pregnant woman that contains her DNA and DNA from the pregnancy. The sample is analyzed in a laboratory to check for an abnormal amount of DNA from chromosomes 21, 18, and 13.
Ultrasound
The physicians at North Scottsdale Women’s Health are proud to offer in office ultrasonography. The health of your pregnancy is confirmed via ultrasound at your first prenatal appointment. Another genetic screening ultrasound is performed around 12 weeks to confirm the viability and screening for genetic conditions. At 20 weeks, another ultrasound is performed to evaluate your pregnancy more thoroughly which is known as the anatomy ultrasound. This ultrasound will locate the placenta, determine the gender of your baby, measure the fluid in the uterus, and survey the health of your baby. A growth ultrasound is performed at 30 weeks to estimate the weight of your baby at the time of delivery. Additional ultrasounds are performed in the third trimester of pregnancy if it is deemed medically necessary. For example, women with high blood pressure, diabetes, or multiples will have more ultrasounds during their pregnancy.
